When your eyes get too dry, your brain sends an "emergency signal" to produce a flood of reflex tears. However, these tears are mostly water and lack the oil needed to stay on the eye, so they just run down your cheeks without providing relief.
While some patients feel immediate relief after a MiBo Thermoflo® session, dry eye is a chronic condition. Most treatment plans involve a combination of in-office therapy and simple home maintenance for the best long-term results.
Why is driving at night becoming more difficult?
One important factor is pupil size. In dim lighting, our pupils naturally enlarge to allow more light into the eye. Larger pupils can also allow more optical imperfections to affect vision, causing increased glare, halos around lights, and reduced clarity. Some people also experience a mild myopic (nearsighted) shift at night, making distant objects appear blurrier than they do during the day.
Cataracts are among the most common causes of night vision problems. As the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, light scatters inside the eye, creating glare and halos from oncoming headlights. Cataracts also reduce contrast sensitivity—the ability to distinguish objects from their background—which can make pedestrians, road hazards, and lane markings more difficult to see.
Dry eye disease can also significantly affect night vision. A healthy tear film creates a smooth optical surface on the front of the eye. When the eyes are dry, vision may fluctuate, headlights may appear streaky or distorted, and glare often becomes more noticeable, especially during evening driving.
Another important factor is contrast sensitivity. Even patients who can read the 20/20 line on an eye chart may have reduced contrast sensitivity, making it harder to detect objects in low-light conditions. Aging, cataracts, retinal disease, glaucoma, and other eye conditions can all affect contrast sensitivity.
