Preserving Vision for Life

September 27, 2016

We only have two eyes and they show us the world. Making sure they are healthy for life is a must for all individuals. Although genetics play a role in many diseases, including ocular diseases, there are many preventative methods for maximizing your vision for life. Taking these preventative actions will help your eyes to remain healthy and seeing well. For example, smoking has been found to significantly increase the risk of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, ocular surface diseases, and cardiovascular diseases (which also have a direct effect on eye health). Slowing down, or quitting smoking altogether is a big priority for eye health. Proper nutrition, especially green leafy vegetables or taking an eye vitamin supplement is another important preventative measure. Omega-3 fatty acids and fish oil are recommended by physicians in order to reduce inflammation in the body, but they also play a huge role in managing dry eye disease. Lastly, proper UV protection in sunglasses can aid in preventing cataracts and macular degeneration. We all know that Ultra violet light can cause changes to your skin, it can also cause changes to the eyes as well. Our lives would be very different without vision. Taking proper steps in order to preserve our vision and eye health is a must.
